"Open & Affirming" Sunday:
June is Gay Pride Month, and this Sunday, we celebrate "Open & Affirming" Sunday in the United Church of Christ. Douglas UCC is proud to be among the first churches to become recognized as an Open & Affirming church, affirming the full inclusion of gays, lesbians, bisexuals and transgender persons (LGBT) in the church's life and ministry. This Sunday during our "Video Worship Service," we will be celebrating the spiritual gifts with which the LGBTQ community blesses our church family and our world. Message: Pastor Sal.

The Kin-dom of Heaven is Here!
At last Sunday's service, Pastor Sal examined what Jesus really said to his apostles about carrying the message out into the world. We also shared our call to work against gun violence in our world, and news of the afternoon's Black Lives Matter solidarity march from Douglas to Saugatuck, including an address from our own church member, Stan Greene. Our musical Director Peter Black, along with Mark Reiman and Nancy Plantinga, provided inspirational music for the service, and Greg Sherman gave the week's reading. Black Lives Matter March
Last Sunday, our Douglas UCC family and community came out in full-force for a Black Lives Matter march in Saugatuck/Douglas. Our church member, Stan Greene, inspired and challenged us all with his prophetic and powerful words. Thank you to all who took part and to our own Mark Reiman for the photos. With more than 30 households on the Friendship Hall Zoom call this past Sunday, there was much news to share. Here's a rundown:
We all celebrated that Peter Black and Robert Trenary are moving to Douglas! They will be settled soon, tired and happy!
Lynne Snyder let us all know that Saugatuck Drug Store holds a credit account you may wish to donate to at any time to help local residents pay for their prescription drugs. When you are there making purchases or picking up prescriptions, just ask to donate any amount to that account to help our neighbors.

At last Sunday's service, we explored how the doctrine of the Trinity can help us during this time of uncertainty and unrest. We also shared all of your Pentecost photos in a beautiful slideshow set to Pamela Chappell's original song, "One." If you missed it, you can watch it here.
We officially welcome new members to our church twice a year: once in the Spring and once in the Fall. We were unable to hold our Spring New Members class in person due to the coronavirus, but Pastor Sal will be holding the class online via Zoom on June 18 at 6 PM. If you are interested in becoming a member of our church, please email Pastor Sal to register for the class. This class is also open to current church members who'd like a "refresher" course.
March at 2pm Sunday
This Sunday at 2 PM, a march in solidarity with the Black community to speak out against racism and end police violence. March is from Beery Field in Douglas to Coghlin Park in Saugatuck. Please wear masks and try to maintain as much social distancing as possible.

Pam Chappell and Pete Wehle reported on the march in South Haven (photo above), and Dan Mack on one of the recent marches in Holland. Sarah Swift, Bev Hawkes, Stan Greene, and Star Huggett all have reading and resource lists if you're feeling housebound and looking for ways to enter this worldwide movement. Trinity Sunday:
The first Sunday after Pentecost is Trinity Sunday, an opportunity for us to reflect intentionally on one of Christianity’s most important (and challenging!) ideas. And, as the global pandemic continues to unfold, now compounded by turmoil over George Floyd’s murder by a police officer, the question is unavoidable: How can the doctrine of the Trinity help in this time of crisis? Thank you to all who tuned in last Sunday for our Video Worship Service. Pastor Sal began the service in black and white, reading aloud a letter from our UCC leadership about the murder of George Floyd, who we honored during our prayer time. Peter Black played two powerful hymns, calling upon the Spirit to "renew the face of the Earth" and to "send down your fire of justice." Defining Masculinity
Our friends at Resilience in Holland are holding online learning programs on the subject of defining and redefining masculinity. They are hosting a 5-week Virtual Defining Masculinity Conversation Series on Wednesday mornings at 11a.m. Each program runs for approximately 90 minutes. Conversations will engage topics such as the Meaning of Manhood, Healthy Relationships, Emotional Vulnerability, and how men can become an ally for change. This virtual series is free and open to all, although space is limited. To register for the Virtual Defining Masculinity Series, please use the link below. Friendship Hall Recap:
At Friendship Hall meetup this past Sunday, we gathered with one thing on our mind, grieving and looking for ways that George Floyd's murder in Minneapolis might be raised up as a memory and turning point for us as individuals and as a congregation, to learn and grow in faith and love. Pastor Sal pointed us to the UCC's program the Cross and the Lynching Tree, held online last Sunday, which is available to watch online here; to the UCC's White Priviledge Curiculum, helping us learn how to be better allies, available here. Please consider Friendship Hall and participating with our Social Justice Team good places to find support and pray for healing in our country. And the UCC wants you to be aware of these actions we can take now:
