The question of how a religious person relates to religion and also to government— that is church and state— isn’t new. The uber religious Jews brought this question to Jesus. In effect they weren’t really looking for an answer, they posed it to serve as a trap. How do we fall into that trap today? How does Jesus' answer inform how we relate to our government and to our God?

Let's Celebrate Laurie VanDen Beldt!
This Sunday, October 18!

On Sunday, October 18 during the coffee hour,
we will honor Laurie Vanden Beldt
for her contribution to the ministry of DUCC as custodian.

There will be a time for sharing memories and appreciation.
There will also be a box for cards and monetary gifts if you are so inclined.
Please plan to attend!

Laurie Vanden Beldt has ably served Douglas UCC as Custodian for 14 years. Since 2012, Laurie has kept all the buildings of our campus - the Sanctuary, Friendship Hall, Isabel Graham Center and Retreat House - clean and safe. She has an attention to detail that means she goes above and beyond, doing things that aren't necessarily in the job, like placing the offering plates back where ushers can find them each week. She is concerned with creation care and so takes great pride in managing the recycling even if it means cleaning items of food scraps when people misplace their waste. There are many ways that the things Laurie has done go unseen. The fact that you don't notice them is a testimony to her care for our beloved church. You probably know of ways that Laurie has been instrumental in facilitating the cleanliness of this place or memories of interactions with Laurie.

A Practical Workshop on Outdoor Lighting

Wednesday, October 21
6–7 PM
in the Friendship Hall
no registration required.

Practical information on how to improve the outdoor lighting at your home or business while reducing glare, saving money, and bringing back the stars.
Chris Clark will introduce Five Principles for Responsible Outdoor Lighting and explain how to qualify for the Night-Sky-Friendly Challenge — participants whose lighting meets the criteria earn a yard sign or window placard.

Social Justice Team Meeting, October 20

Please join us at 7pm in the Isabel Graham Center where we will hear from Rich Marth & Ceci Garcia who coordinates the migrant ministry out of San Felipe de Jesus. We will learn about the impact DUCC's generosity had on migrant workers this Summer. Plus you'll hear about future opportunities to serve those in need in our community.

We will discuss the propositions on our November ballots, talk about the implications for using the popular vote in future elections, and answer questions on recent court rulings and implications for voting in November. Please invite your friends & neighbors.

The League of Women Voters is a nonpartisan organizations that works to empower voters and defend democracy. They study issues, but do not support any political candidates.

This is a good time to ask questions about any voting procedures that are confusing and ensure that your vote counts!

Creation Justice - Watching Nature Comeback

For the past two years,
Douglas United Church of Christ has been exploring how the land surrounding our church could better reflect our commitment to being good stewards of God’s creation.

Come by and watch the change.
What may begin as a messy patch
of ground will become a living example of how we can make
room for nature.

With guidance from the Outdoor Discovery Center in Holland, we have decided to restore a grassy area on our campus with native plants. With so much development in our area, restoring even a small piece of native habitat can make a difference. Native plants provide food and shelter for pollinators, birds, butterflies, and countless other creatures—and they
benefit people, too.

Our hope is that this restoration will become a beautiful example for our congregation and the larger community. Native plantings are already appearing at the Saugatuck-Douglas District Library, the Holland Aquatic Center, and in yards throughout our community. There is one important thing to remember: restoration takes time. For the first year or two, the area may look weedy and messy as the grass is removed and native plants become established. Eventually, we hope it will become a thriving, beautiful habitat. The Outdoor Discovery Center will oversee the initial work. Once established, the area will require only occasional maintenance. This project was funded by the members and friends of the Creation Justice Team.

of dreams based on the book “Dreams: God’s Forgotten Language” by John Sanford. His exploration of dreams in the Bible as well as those of his clients (he is a therapist and Episcopal priest) is fascinating.

Coffee Hour Volunteers Needed

Remote sign up method for DUCC coffee hour volunteers.
The coffee committee is hoping to get more volunteers involved in staffing the coffee hour after Sunday services. Making coffee takes only about 10-15 minutes of your time prior to church, or helping with the cleanup can take about 30 minutes.
Once or twice a year, or as often as you'd like, helps to avoid burnout of the current volunteers.
You will be paired with a "buddy" to show you the ropes (and the coffee grinds!).
And now you can sign up remotely, from anywhere at any time. Easy peasy!

Art Coast Performers Presents - Talking Heads!
This Weekend Friday, Saturday & Sunday!

Tickets will also be available for purchase at each performance at the venue.
Talking Heads first performed in 1982 on the BBC with a total of 14 installments.
Among the luminaries performing for the series were Maggie Smith and Patricia Routledge.
Each installment featured one actor performing a monologue about a character with a challenging problem or dilemma to overcome. The narratives are instantly compelling, sad, and humorous, and they have found a life on the stage since their television debut.

The Art Coast Performers will feature three of the monologues:
A Cream Cracker Under the Settee, performed by Virginia Stuart of Saugatuck, involves Doris, an elderly woman living alone with some supervision. Doris is one fall away from placement in a nursing facility, and, unfortunately, that fall just occurred forcing Doris to face the consequences of taking a risk.

A Bed among the Lentils, performed by Shannon Connell of Fennville, is the story of Susan, a vicar’s wife whose drinking problem creates funny situations and inappropriate decisions. As she spirals downward, she encounters an unlikely savior whose quiet influence forces her to confront her demon.

A Chip in the Sugar, performed by Jim Kern of Fennville, is about an older man, Graham,
who lives with and dotes on his mother. A paranoid schizophrenic, Graham comes apart when Mother meets an old flame from her past, ultimately threatening the relationship she has with Graham.

Dedicated to presenting small cast, one set plays with compelling characters and themes,
Art Coast Performers intends to expand on experiences available in the Art Coast. In 2025,
the group presented Relativity by Mark St. Germain to critical acclaim. In addition to plays,
Art Coast Performers hosted Tango 21 Dance Theater of Chicago at Saugatuck Women’s Club
and at the Holland Area Arts Council.

October is "SOUP-TOBER"!

Christian Neighbors Food Pantry is getting ready for winter
and would like to stock its shelves with canned soup for its clients.

For the month of SOUPTOBER (Oct 1-31)
Christian Neighbors is requesting donated cans of soup.
Soup can be dropped off at Christian Neighbors (6874 Wiley Road)
Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday form 9:30 am-12:00 pm.

You can drop off soup in the foyer of the DUCC Friendship Hall.
Many other drop sites are available in the community.

Out On The Lakeshore
Building Belonging All Year Long

If you believe in the work we are doing and want to help us keep showing up all year long, we would love for you to consider joining the League of Allies
as a monthly supporter.
Out On The Lakeshore is a Holland-based LGBTQ+ nonprofit working to create a more inclusive, connected, and welcoming Lakeshore. While many people know us through Pride, our work happens all year through community programs, support groups, youth resources, education, advocacy, partnerships, wellness initiatives, and our Community Center.

A big part of our focus right now is building more sustainable community support through our League of Allies. League of Allies members are individuals (and businesses sponsor levels) who choose to support our work monthly at whatever level feels right for them. Even $5, $10, or $25 a month becomes incredibly meaningful when a whole community chooses to show up together.

COMING SOON: We are also excited to be growing Neighbor to Neighbor, a grassroots initiative centered around a simple idea: neighbors have knowledge, skills, and resources that other neighbors need. Through upcoming Neighbor to Neighbor events, local businesses, nonprofits, volunteers, and community members will come together to share practical skills, make connections, and help people more easily find trusted resources.

Last Weeks Service: The Big Ten

Two themes came together last Sunday. World Wide Communion, first observed in 1933,
celebrated on the first Sunday in October. With Protestant churches near and far, we
acknowledged our similarities more than our differences, that which unites us rather than those things that divide us. The reading from the Hebrew scriptures comprised the Ten
Commandments, or as some would like to think: The Ten Suggestions. Do those ancient laws
still have the capacity to shape our lives for today? Or is it time to revise them?

Out On The Lakeshore
Building Belonging All Year Long

If you believe in the work we are doing and want to help us keep showing up all year long, we would love for you to consider joining the League of Allies
as a monthly supporter.

Out On The Lakeshore is a Holland-based LGBTQ+ nonprofit working to create a more inclusive, connected, and welcoming Lakeshore. While many people know us through Pride, our work happens all year through community programs, support groups, youth resources, education, advocacy, partnerships, wellness initiatives, and our Community Center.

A big part of our focus right now is building more sustainable community support through our League of Allies. League of Allies members are individuals (and businesses sponsor levels) who choose to support our work monthly at whatever level feels right for them. Even $5, $10, or $25 a month becomes incredibly meaningful when a whole community chooses to show up together.

COMING SOON: We are also excited to be growing Neighbor to Neighbor, a grassroots initiative centered around a simple idea: neighbors have knowledge, skills, and resources that other neighbors need. Through upcoming Neighbor to Neighbor events, local businesses, nonprofits, volunteers, and community members will come together to share practical skills, make connections, and help people more easily find trusted resources.

Two themes come together this Sunday. World Wide Communion, first observed in 1933, is
celebrated on the first Sunday in October. With Protestant churches near and far, we
acknowledge our similarities more than our differences, that which unites us rather than those
things that divide us. The reading from the Hebrew scriptures comprise the Ten
Commandments, or as some would like to think: The Ten Suggestions. Do those ancient laws
still have the capacity to shape our lives for today? Or is it time to revise them?

Social Justice Team of Douglas UCC Welcomes the League of Women
Voters of Holland
October 22 at 6:30 pm
in our Friendship Hall

We will discuss the propositions on our November ballots, talk about the implications for using the popular vote in future elections, and answer questions on recent court rulings and implications for voting in November.

The League of Women Voters is a nonpartisan organizations that works to empower voters and defend democracy. They study issues, but do not support any political candidates.

This is a good time to ask questions about any voting procedures that are confusing and ensure that your vote counts!

Qigong & Tea, Tuesday, Oct. 6 from 3-6pm

Qigong is a wonderful, 5,000 year-old practice from China, very much like Tai Chi.
It involves simple movements that build strength, flexibility, balance and well being.
It also employs visualization, breath, and mindfulness to integrate the body, mind,
and spirit and develop our felt sense of Interbeing.

Class is about one hour long involves both sitting and standing practice although it can be done sitting if needed. Requested donation of $10 per class but for those of you on limited incomes, any amount will be gratefully received.

COMMUNITY EVENTS

Art Coast Performers Presents - Talking Heads!

Tickets will also be available for purchase at each performance at the venue.

Talking Heads first performed in 1982 on the BBC with a total of 14 installments. Among the luminaries performing for the series were Maggie Smith and Patricia Routledge. Each installment featured one actor performing a monologue about a character with a challenging problem or dilemma to overcome. The narratives are instantly compelling, sad, and humorous, and they have found a life on the stage since their television debut.

The Art Coast Performers will feature three of the monologues:
A Cream Cracker Under the Settee, performed by Virginia Stuart of Saugatuck, involves Doris, an elderly woman living alone with some supervision. Doris is one fall away from placement in a nursing facility, and, unfortunately, that fall just occurred forcing Doris to face the consequences of taking a risk.

A Bed among the Lentils, performed by Shannon Connell of Fennville, is the story of Susan, a vicar’s wife whose drinking problem creates funny situations and inappropriate decisions. As she spirals downward, she encounters an unlikely savior whose quiet influence forces her to confront her demon.

A Chip in the Sugar, performed by Jim Kern of Fennville, is about an older man, Graham, who lives with and dotes on his mother. A paranoid schizophrenic, Graham comes apart when Mother meets an old flame from her past, ultimately threatening the relationship she has with Graham.

Dedicated to presenting small cast, one set plays with compelling characters and themes,
Art Coast Performers intends to expand on experiences available in the Art Coast. In 2025, the group presented Relativity by Mark St. Germain to critical acclaim. In addition to plays, Art Coast Performers hosted Tango 21 Dance Theater of Chicago at Saugatuck Women’s Club
and at the Holland Area Arts Council.

And, we should remain uncomfortable until we see The Great Work of restoring creation to some semblance of normal; which means we have to continue to do our Little Work. This week we consider the messiness that occurs before the restoration can occur.

Social Justice - SPS Family Support Drive
Big Success! Thank You All!

We are so grateful for your generous donations for the Saugatuck Public Schools family drive. We collected $2,740 for the SPS drive. This Social Justice Fund Raiser will go to assist the families of the students attending our public schools who face food or housing insecurity or difficulty affording gas.
We are still taking donations until the end of September. If you would like to donate, DUCC members can still donate cash or checks and note they are to be directed to the SPS (Saugatuck Public Schools) Family Support Fund. We will then use the cash and checks we collect to purchase gas and food cards. These donations can be placed in an envelope in the offering plate during the Sunday service or sent directly to the office.

We will deliver these cards to Superintendent Neidlinger at the end of September and he will distribute them at his discretion to families facing food insecurity or unable to afford gas.
We would also ask you to keep Superintendent Neidlinger and the SPS faculty, students and families in your prayers.

Last Sunday Pastor Jody wondered about how the planet will survive and what we can do about it. Our Little Work, doing things like, getting to know our other-than-human kin, inquiring into how we can live more aligned with their flourishing, considering what actions we take cause more harm than good, and more, are invaluable in contributing to The Great Work of addressing the condition of our planet. Pastor Jody invited us to think of other creatures as our roommates on this planet, and therefore be more inclined to have their well-being in the back of our minds as we make decisions of life. We considered these options last week as we looked at the second creation story in Genesis. Watch full service and/or Jody's message.

Christian Neighbors Food Pantry is getting ready for winter and would like to stock its shelves with canned soup for its clients.
For the month of SOUPTOBER (Oct 1-31)
Christian Neighbors is requesting donated cans of soup.
Soup can be dropped off at Christian Neighbors (6874 Wiley Road)
Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday form 9:30 am-12:00 pm.
Many other drop sites are available in the community
including participating churches and the community sites below:

Our Little Work, doing things like, getting to know our other-than-human kin, inquiring into how we can live more aligned with their flourishing, considering what actions we take cause more harm than good, and more, are invaluable in contributing to The Great Work of addressing the condition of our planet. Maybe if we think of other creatures as our roommates on this planet, we will be more inclined to have their well-being in the back of our minds as we make decisions of life. We'll consider this option this week as we look at the second creation story in Genesis. Please join us!

The Campus Custodian helps keep our church buildings and grounds clean, safe,
welcoming, and ready for Sunday activities, programs, meetings, rentals, and
community guests.
We’re looking for someone who:

Takes pride in doing quality work
Can work independently and reliably
Has custodial, housekeeping, or related experience
Is comfortable with a flexible schedule, including evenings and weekends
Enjoys helping create a welcoming environment for others

This is a contract position, with the schedule, services, and compensation established
by agreement.

Social Justice - Saugatuck Public Schools
Family Support Drive

Thanks to many of you, we are already halfway to our goal for our Saugatuck Public Schools Family Support Fund. This will be the last week of this Social Justice Fund Raiser to assist the families of the students attending our public schools who face food or housing insecurity or difficulty affording gas.
This is consistent with an NPR article from last week stating that millions of children across the US are members of families who have recently lost SNAP benefits and the results of a new survey from the Federal Reserve which found " a remarkable increase in food insecurity in the US".

DUCC members can donate cash or checks and note they are to be directed to the SPS (Saugatuck Public Schools) Family Support Fund. We will then use the cash and checks we collect to purchase gas and food cards. These donations can be placed in an envelope in the offering plate during the Sunday service or sent directly to the office. Please note that donations to this SPS Designated Ministry Fund can be claimed as a tax deduction.

We will deliver these cards to Superintendent Neidlinger at the end of September and he will distribute them at his discretion to families facing food insecurity or unable to afford gas.
We would also ask you to keep Superintendent Neidlinger and the SPS faculty, students and families in your prayers.

Qigong is a wonderful, 5,000 year-old practice from China, very much like Tai Chi. It involves simple movements that build strength, flexibility, balance and well being. It also employs visualization, breath, and mindfulness to integrate the body, mind, and spirit and develop our felt sense of Interbeing. Class is one hour long and involves both sitting and standing practice although it can be done sitting if needed. There is a requested donation of $10 per class but for those of you on limited incomes, any amount will be gratefully received.

Out On The Lakeshore is a Holland-based LGBTQ+ nonprofit working to create a more inclusive, connected, and welcoming Lakeshore. While many people know us through Pride, our work happens all year through community programs, support groups, youth resources, education, advocacy, partnerships, wellness initiatives, and our Community Center.

A big part of our focus right now is building more sustainable community support through our League of Allies. League of Allies members are individuals (and businesses sponsor levels) who choose to support our work monthly at whatever level feels right for them. Even $5, $10, or $25 a month becomes incredibly meaningful when a whole community chooses to show up together.
If you believe in the work we are doing and want to help us keep showing up all year long, we would love for you to consider joining the League of Allies as a monthly supporter.

COMING SOON: We are also excited to be growing Neighbor to Neighbor, a grassroots initiative centered around a simple idea: neighbors have knowledge, skills, and resources that other neighbors need. Our speaker this week is no stranger to Douglas United Church of Christ. Dr. Debra Rienstra is the daughter-in-law of beloved member Rev. Marchiene Rienstra. She spoke here before when DUCC used her book, Refugia Faith: Seeking Hidden Shelters, Ordinary Wonders, and the Healing of the Earth (Fortress) as a Book Read in 2022. Professor Rienstra received her bachelor of arts in English literature in 1987 from University of Michigan. She graduated with Highest Honors and Highest Distinction. She completed her graduate studies at Rutgers University, receiving an MA in English literature in 1991 and a PhD in literatures in English in 1995. She joined the Calvin University English department in 1996. She has written 3 other books, 2 of which have received awards. Professor Rienstra writes for The Reformed Journal. Her essays are archived here. She also writes the Refugia Newsletter, a newsletter about faith and climate change. For more information, visit her website. Last May, during a meeting with Superintendent Mark Neidlnger, of the Saugatuck Public Schools, we learned that the families of up to 30% of the students attending our public schools may face food or housing insecurity or difficulty affording gas. Our Social Justice Team will be holding a collection for the next 2 weeks ( September 13th and 20th ) where DUCC members can donate cash or checks and note they are to be directed to the SPS( Saugatuck Public Schools ) Family Support Fund. Creation Justice - Native Plant Restoration Project & Looking for Copies of Refugia Faith

Native Plant Restoration Project
The Creation Justice Team is spearheading a project to restore a piece of our land to a prairie. If you were one of the 30 people who visited Anne Dooley’s garden, you have some idea of how it might look. If you happen to see the area around our local Saugatuck Douglas Library or the area around the Holland Aquatic Center, you have an idea of what the area will look like in a couple of years.

Lawns are fun for kids to play in, but they are considered wastelands for birds, butterflies and other creatures. The CJT has spent about a year researching good proposals and settled on Outdoor Discovery Center to make the plan, prepare the space, plant the plants, and maintain the area. It will take about a year to remove the lawn and begin to plant plugs. It will look like a pile of weeds and dead plants. Not very appealing at first. But after a while, the native plants will slowly take over and produce a beautiful array of native plants, inviting to butterflies, and birds.

Our expectation is that this space can be an education tool for our members and the larger community. There will be signage explaining what is happening, articles in the Commercial Record, maybe even a radio interview or two. We are certain this project will make a great addition to our campus and hope you will enjoy watching as it comes to life.

Memorial Garden Update on Find A Grave

The Douglas UCC Memorial Garden is now much better represented on the Find a Grave website. Thirty-two memorials were added, and they can be found by family historians and genealogists around the world.
Find a Grave is a free, volunteer-run resource with more than 265 million memorials. Now that the basic information is in place, anyone who wishes can add photographs, biographies, or other memories to a loved one’s memorial. If you’d like help doing that, Chris Clark can assist—or you can create a free Find a Grave account and make the additions yourself.

Update on Our Financial Reporting

An Update on Our Financial Reporting: As part of our ongoing efforts to make DUCC's financial reporting clear, useful, and meaningful, Church Council recently agreed to make a change in the financial information we publish regularly to the congregation.
Going forward, we will no longer publish a comparison of year-to-date offerings to the annual budget throughout the year.
There is a practical reason for this change: the way people give to DUCC is changing. While some members continue to give weekly or monthly, others make larger gifts periodically during the year. Some make quarterly gifts, annual gifts, gifts of appreciated assets, or Qualified Charitable Distributions from their IRAs. Giving also naturally varies by season. As a result, comparing offerings received at a particular point in the year with a straight-line percentage of the annual budget can give an incomplete—and sometimes misleading—picture of our financial position.
This change does not mean less financial oversight. The Treasurer and Church Council will continue to receive and review detailed financial information, including income and expenses compared with budget, cash and reserve balances, investments, designated and restricted funds, and other information needed to monitor the church's finances. Our goal is to provide the congregation with financial information that is understandable, relevant, and appropriate to the decisions members are being asked to make.
DUCC remains in a strong position to continue improving how we manage, oversee, and communicate about the financial resources entrusted to our church. We believe these changes will help us focus our reporting on information that provides a more complete picture of our finances and supports thoughtful stewardship and good governance.

Last Weeks Service: The Great Work and the Little Work

Last Sunday Pastor Jody shared places of safety where life can survive, heal and begin again - "refugia". She reminded us that we also can create refuge for one another, & the natural world.
We honor the Season of Creation for the month of September in light of the ongoing concerns of climate change.
This month we will be looking back at the themes in the Book Refugia Faith by Dr. Debra Rienstra, a DUCC book read in 2022. Refugium are places where, in the midst of disturbances, life continues to not just survive, but flourish with hope for the future. Qigong is a wonderful, 5,000 year-old practice from China, very much like Tai Chi. It involves simple movements that build strength, flexibility, balance and well being. It also employs visualization, breath, and mindfulness to integrate the body, mind, and spirit and develop our felt sense of Interbeing. Class is one hour long and involves both sitting and standing practice although it can be done sitting if needed. There is a requested donation of $10 per class but for those of you on limited incomes, any amount will be gratefully received.

Out On The Lakeshore
Building Belonging All Year Long

Out On The Lakeshore is a Holland-based LGBTQ+ nonprofit working to create a more inclusive, connected, and welcoming Lakeshore. While many people know us through Pride, our work happens all year through community programs, support groups, youth resources, education, advocacy, partnerships, wellness initiatives, and our Community Center.

A big part of our focus right now is building more sustainable community support through our League of Allies. League of Allies members are individuals (and businesses sponsor levels) who choose to support our work monthly at whatever level feels right for them. Even $5, $10, or $25 a month becomes incredibly meaningful when a whole community chooses to show up together.
If you believe in the work we are doing and want to help us keep showing up all year long, we would love for you to consider joining the League of Allies as a monthly supporter.

COMING SOON: We are also excited to be growing Neighbor to Neighbor, a grassroots initiative centered around a simple idea: neighbors have knowledge, skills, and resources that other neighbors need. Through upcoming Neighbor to Neighbor events, local businesses, nonprofits, volunteers, and community members will come together to share practical skills, make connections, and help people more easily find trusted resources.

This Week's Service: The Great Work and the Little Work

In 1989 Ecumenical Patriarch Dimitrios I proclaimed September 1 as a Day of Prayer for Creation for the Eastern Orthodox Church. In 2007 the Third European Ecumenical Assembly proposed extending the single day into a multi-week observance. In 2008 the World Council of Churches invited Christian communities worldwide to observe a "Time for Creation." In 2015 Pope Francis established September 1 as the World Day of Prayer for the Care of Creation in the Roman Catholic Church. Today, the season is widely embraced across Orthodox, Catholic, Anglican, and Protestant traditions, supported by an ecumenical steering committee that provides yearly themes and liturgical resources. We honor the Season of Creation for the month of September in light of the ongoing concerns of climate change.

This month we will be looking back at the themes in the Book Refugia Faith by Dr. Debra Rienstra, a DUCC book read in 2022. Refugium are places where, in the midst of disturbances, life continues to not just survive, but flourish with hope for the future. Our wondering together will be, how do we become refugia as a faith community, looking to creation as our teacher.

Auditions at DUCC for The Best Christmas Pageant Ever

THE BEST CHRISTMAS PAGEANT EVER
READER’S THEATRE PRODUCTION
Directed by Tom Fahlstrom

If you are interested in being part of this performance which will be on either Sunday afternoon, December 13 or 20th here at DUCC, please sign up on the form in Friendship Hall. Auditions will be on Tuesday, September 8th in Friendship Hall 6:30-8:30. Rehearsals will be on Tuesdays from 6:30-8:30 with one or two more the week of the show, especially Saturday, Dec. 12 or 19th. Parts for 8-10 people. Ever want to let your inner child come forth and have some fun. This is your chance!

Reader’s Theatre is exactly what it says. It is taking a piece of literature and interpreting it using the voice and body. It is read, so there is no memorization required. You will have the script in a black folder and a stool to sit on when you are not reading. There will be some movement to different locations in the setting. Synopsis: The Best Christmas Pageant Ever by Barbara Robinson tells the story of the Herdman siblings, notorious for their misbehavior, who unexpectedly take on the roles of Mary, Joseph, and the Angel in the church's Christmas pageant. Their unconventional interpretation of the Christmas story challenges the community's perceptions and ultimately leads to a heartfelt and authentic portrayal of the nativity. The pageant becomes a transformative experience for both the Herdmans and the audience, highlighting the true spirit of Christmas.

Social Justice - Saugatuck Public Schools, Gas & Food Card Drive

Last May, during a meeting with Superintendent Mark Neidlnger, of the Saugatuck Public Schools, we learned that the families of up to 30% of the students attending our public schools may face food or housing insecurity or difficulty affording gas. We asked for ways we could help address these challenges and Mark provided 4 ideas our team members subsequently voted on. Two ideas emerged as top vote getters and now we would like to ask for your support for the first initiative.

We will be holding a collection for 2 weeks this September (September 13th and 20th) where DUCC members can donate cash or checks and note they are to be directed to the SPS( Saugatuck Public Schools ) Family Support Fund. We will then use the cash and checks we collect to purchase gas and food cards. These donations can be placed in an envelope in the offering plate during the Sunday service or sent directly to the office PO Box 519, Douglas, Michigan, 49406. Please note that donations to this SPS Designated Ministry Fund can be claimed as a tax deduction.

We are currently working out logistics around purchasing the gift cards which we will deliver to Superintendent Neidlinger to distribute at his discretion to families facing food insecurity or unable to afford gas. We would also love to see you spread awareness of the many Saugatuck Public Schools' families who could use our help among your friends in the community and keep them in your prayers.

Creation Justice - Native Plant Restoration Project & Looking for Copies of Refugia Faith

Native Plant Restoration Project
The Creation Justice Team is spearheading a project to restore a piece of our land to a prairie. If you were one of the 30 people who visited Anne Dooley’s garden, you have some idea of how it might look. If you happen to see the area around our local Saugatuck Douglas Library or the area around the Holland Aquatic Center, you have an idea of what the area will look like in a couple of years.
Lawns are fun for kids to play in, but they are considered wastelands for birds, butterflies and other creatures. The CJT has spent about a year researching good proposals and settled on Outdoor Discovery Center to make the plan, prepare the space, plant the plants, and maintain the area. It will take about a year to remove the lawn and begin to plant plugs. It will look like a pile of weeds and dead plants. Not very appealing at first. But after a while, the native plants will slowly take over and produce a beautiful array of native plants, inviting to butterflies, and birds. Our expectation is that this space can be an education tool for our members and the larger community. There will be signage explaining what is happening, articles in the Commercial Record, maybe even a radio interview or two. We are certain this project will make a great addition to our campus and hope you will enjoy watching as it comes to life.

Coffee Hour Volunteers Needed

Remote sign up method for DUCC coffee hour volunteers.
The coffee committee is hoping to get more volunteers involved in staffing the coffee hour after Sunday services. Making coffee takes only about 10-15 minutes of your time prior to church, or helping with the cleanup can take about 30 minutes. Once or twice a year, or as often as you'd like, helps to avoid burnout of the current volunteers.
You will be paired with a "buddy" to show you the ropes (and the coffee grinds!).
And now you can sign up remotely, from anywhere at any time. Easy peasy!

Ladders of Hope staffed by committed volunteers who have strived to provide food and other needs to the community. We also thank Carolyn Moen chair of their Board and past Director for sharing their ministry with us.

Ladders of Hope offers these opportunities for volunteers:
Truck Driver - Mondays and Fridays (and other possible days) to pick up food from Feeding America and Trader Joes (truck provided)
Volunteers to distribute food to clients on Mondays from 10a - 2p and Thursdays from 3 - 7p
Volunteer to receive donations on Tuesdays from 5 - 7p

Social Justice - Last Weekend for the Summer Food Ministry

The Summer Food Ministry for 2026 is coming to an end. We so appreciate the generosity of the DUCC congregation. Over the last 11 weeks, we have been able to fill 220 bags of groceries for our friends in need. What a beautiful reflection of our little Church. We are looking to fill another 20 bags for this final week, distribution is Tuesday, Sept 1st.
The following is a list of our needs for this week.
* can of pinto beans (7 needed)
* can of Diced Tomatoes
* 1 lb bag of white rice.  (7 needed)
* small btl vegetable oil. (3 needed)
* cans of diced/sliced fruit. (10 needed)
* potatoes   (2-3 5lb bags needed)

Last Weeks Service: Subversive Women Defy the Pharaoh

Last Sunday Pastor Dan encouraged us to be the light in the world, and to show up courageously. As Shiprah (pronounced SHIF-rah) and Puah Egyptian midwives did by ignoring the kings orders. They were Egyptian midwives who were ordered by the king of Egypt to kill all the male newborns birthed by Hebrew women. This was the king’s way of weakening the ever-growing Hebrew population that was viewed by the palace court as a threat to Egyptian society. The midwives proved to be more powerful than the Pharaoh, and it all started with their quiet defiance. They simply refused to obey imperial power. What does courage look like in our day? Qigong is a wonderful, 5,000 year-old practice from China, very much like Tai Chi. It involves simple movements that build strength, flexibility, balance and well being. It also employs visualization, breath, and mindfulness to integrate the body, mind, and spirit and develop our felt sense of Interbeing. Class is one hour long and involves both sitting and standing practice although it can be done sitting if needed. There is a requested donation of $10 per class but for those of you on limited incomes, any amount will be gratefully received.

Thank you for the continued and amazing generosity of the DUCC congregation. We have been able to fill 20 bags of groceries for the past 9 weeks. With approximately 3 weeks to go, we are hoping to continue the support for the volunteers of St Felipe De Jesus. The following is a list of items to fill the 20 bags per week. Value of each bag is approximately $28.

Update on Our Financial Reporting

An Update on Our Financial ReportingAs part of our ongoing efforts to make DUCC's financial reporting clear, useful, and meaningful, Church Council recently agreed to make a change in the financial information we publish regularly to the congregation.
Going forward, we will no longer publish a comparison of year-to-date offerings to the annual budget throughout the year.
There is a practical reason for this change: the way people give to DUCC is changing. While some members continue to give weekly or monthly, others make larger gifts periodically during the year. Some make quarterly gifts, annual gifts, gifts of appreciated assets, or Qualified Charitable Distributions from their IRAs. Giving also naturally varies by season. As a result, comparing offerings received at a particular point in the year with a straight-line percentage of the annual budget can give an incomplete—and sometimes misleading—picture of our financial position.
This change does not mean less financial oversight. The Treasurer and Church Council will continue to receive and review detailed financial information, including income and expenses compared with budget, cash and reserve balances, investments, designated and restricted funds, and other information needed to monitor the church's finances. Our goal is to provide the congregation with financial information that is understandable, relevant, and appropriate to the decisions members are being asked to make.
DUCC remains in a strong position to continue improving how we manage, oversee, and communicate about the financial resources entrusted to our church. We believe these changes will help us focus our reporting on information that provides a more complete picture of our finances and supports thoughtful stewardship and good governance.

The story has all the makings of a musical - oh, right, it was made into a musical. So you know then that Joseph is reconciled to his brothers - a whole other story of intrigue that we explored last week. Filled with political savvy, a famine that compels a surprise visit, and a vulnerable ruler. Theologically: reconciliation, forgiveness and redemption, all in one event. And who does what might surprise you. Who are you in the story?

Communion Bread Bakers Needed
We Knead You!

Our Communion Bread is specially baked by members of DUCC. We are looking for a few folks who want to learn this recipe of unleavened bread. It's a one month commitment for about 90 minutes to 2 hours and with enough people only 3 or 4 times a year. If this is something that inspires you, please talk to Jody. We'll schedule a time for instructions when we have a few people available.

Creation Justice - Prairie Restoration Project

Prairie Restoration Project
The Creation Justice Team is spearheading a project to restore a piece of our land to a prairie. If you were one of the 30 people who visited Anne Dooley’s garden, you have some idea of how it might look. If you happen to see the area around our local Saugatuck Douglas Library or the area around the Holland Aquatic Center, you have an idea of what the area will look like in a couple of years.
Lawns are fun for kids to play in, but they are considered wastelands for birds, butterflies and other creatures. The CJT has spent about a year researching good proposals and settled on Outdoor Discovery Center to make the plan, prepare the space, plant the plants, and maintain the area. It will take about a year to remove the lawn and begin to plant plugs. It will look like a pile of weeds and dead plants. Not very appealing at first. But after a while, the native plants will slowly take over and produce a beautiful array of native plants, inviting to butterflies, and birds. Our expectation is that this space can be an education tool for our members and the larger community. There will be signage explaining what is happening, articles in the Commercial Record, maybe even a radio interview or two. We are certain this project will make a great addition to our campus and hope you will enjoy watching as it comes to life.

Coffee Hour Volunteers Needed

Remote sign up method for DUCC coffee hour volunteers.
The coffee committee is hoping to get more volunteers involved in staffing the coffee hour after Sunday services. Making coffee takes only about 10-15 minutes of your time prior to church, or helping with the cleanup can take about 30 minutes. Once or twice a year, or as often as you'd like, helps to avoid burnout of the current volunteers.
You will be paired with a "buddy" to show you the ropes (and the coffee grinds!).
And now you can sign up remotely, from anywhere at any time. Easy peasy!

Last Weeks Service: Pits Are Inevitable

Nothing like a good story about family feuds, lots of jealousy, back stabbing intrigue,
and plenty of dysfunction! The stuff of daytime soap operas. It’s all pretty much there in the
stories we’ve been hearing about in the book of Genesis. Last Sunday’s story was a continuation of family messiness. Joseph, donning a coat of many colors, is tossed into a pit and sold to a bunch of Ishmaelites on their way to Egypt. Pastor Dan invited us to remember times when we reached out to someone, or they to us when we were in the "pits". Reminding us God is always present in the hand of a friend, stranger or family member. We also had a treat from the music team who played music from “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.” Watch the full service and/or Dan's message below.

Qigong Winter Class
Tuesdays, 3pm - 4 pm
Followed by Tea/Chat 4 - 5pm

Qigong is a wonderful, 5,000 year-old practice from China, very much like Tai Chi. It involves simple movements that build strength, flexibility, balance and well being. It also employs visualization, breath, and mindfulness to integrate the body, mind, and spirit and develop our felt sense of Interbeing. Class is one hour long and involves both sitting and standing practice although it can be done sitting if needed. There is a requested donation of $10 per class but for those of you on limited incomes, any amount will be gratefully received.
