This Week's Service: Seventh Sunday of Easter
My Ascension Moment

Happy Ascension Day! . . . a day late. Ascension Day, which occurs on the church calendar 40 days after Easter, always falls on a Thursday. Tough to draw a crowd to church on a Thursday! Instead, how about Ascension Sunday? Ascension can’t compete with Christmas, and it doesn’t welcome crowds on the scale of Easter, but the story of Jesus’s Ascension (no matter how you choose to understand it) does offer some insights in holy living. I’m drawn to a quote by author Elizabeth Gilbert: “There’s always another level up. There’s always another ascension. More grace, more light, more generosity, more compassion, more to shed, more to grow.”

Douglas United Church of Christ has prayerfully considered adding a second worship service for the summer season. This conversation arises out of gratitude for the vibrant, welcoming
community we have become—and a desire to steward that growth faithfully.
Our goals are to open the doors to visitors and guests while continuing our care for our current
members. When guests walk through the doors we imagine they are met with extravagant
welcome and genuine connection. This spirit is a hallmark of our congregation and a reflection
of our shared ministry.
At the same time, our current worship service is often at or near capacity. Seating can be
limited—particularly for families, couples, or small groups wishing to sit together—and this can
unintentionally create barriers for newcomers and longtime participants alike.
Being at or near maximum capacity limits our ability to grow, to welcome, and to respond to the movement of the Spirit among us. We want to continue to invite deeper participation in the life of the church—providing meaningful opportunities for people to grow in faith, love, and
community.
DUCC has successfully offered two worship services in the past. Given our current level of
participation we revisited that idea with a team of ten volunteer congregants and church leaders.
This discernment was not simply about numbers or logistics. It is about hospitality,
sustainability, and faithfulness—creating space where all who seek community, meaning, and
God’s love can gather, worship, and belong.
Our Coffee Hour will continue between the services, a place for expanding that warm welcome
to friends and guests alike!

We are excited to see what new opportunities will emerge from this new offering!

Seeking Volunteers - Financial Governance & Stewardship Committee

Seeking Volunteers – Financial Governance & Stewardship Committee
Dear Members and Friends of DUCC,
Church Council recently authorized formation of an ad-hoc committee focused on strengthening DUCC’s long-term financial governance, stewardship practices, reserve policies, and supporting financial procedures.
The purpose of the committee is to review and improve existing financial governance structures already developed within the congregation and to help prepare recommendations for future policy and procedural improvements.
This effort will focus on areas including:

reserve and endowment governance;
long-term financial sustainability;
reserve and capital planning;
donor communication and planned giving;
financial reporting transparency;
chart of accounts and dashboard improvements;
and development of a practical Finance & Accounting Manual documenting church financial procedures and reporting practices.

This is not intended to be a highly technical drafting committee or a “rubber stamp” process. Rather, we are seeking thoughtful individuals willing to:

review documents and recommendations;
provide feedback and suggestions;
help improve clarity and communication;
evaluate processes and procedures;
and assist in strengthening governance for the future of the congregation.

We especially welcome individuals with backgrounds or experience in:

accounting or bookkeeping;
finance or banking;
legal or insurance;
business ownership or management;
nonprofit administration;
process improvement;
communications;
governance;
or related professional experience.

However, thoughtful participation and willingness to review and discuss materials are equally important.
The anticipated commitment is intentionally limited:

approximately 1–2 hours per week reviewing materials;
plus approximately eight one-hour meetings between now and late September;
meetings may be held remotely or in person depending on schedules.

The committee’s goal is to complete its recommendations and present them to Church Council this Fall.
This effort is intended to continue and improve upon the substantial work already invested by many members of the congregation over the years. Our goal is not to reinvent systems unnecessarily, but to clarify, simplify where appropriate, strengthen governance, and improve long-term stewardship practices for future generations of DUCC.

Bookkeeper Needed

We are seeking a volunteer bookkeeper to assist our church/organization with weekly accounting support. Our current bookkeeper is now working five days a week and has asked to be replaced, so we are looking for someone dependable, detail-oriented, and comfortable working with accounting software.
Position Overview

Volunteer position
Approximately 5 hours or less per week once trained
Flexible schedule
Training and a detailed weekly process will be provided
Works closely with the Treasurer

Primary Responsibilities

Accounts payable processing
Assisting with weekly / monthly bookkeeping tasks
Maintaining accurate financial records
Working with QuickBooks or similar accounting software

Preferred Qualifications

Experience with QuickBooks or other accounting software, preferred, not required.
Basic bookkeeping or accounting experience
Comfortable with computerized accounting systems, interest in working with QuickBooks required.
Organized, reliable, and detail-oriented

This non-paid opportunity would be ideal for a retired accountant or bookkeeper, someone with part-time availability, or an individual looking to use their financial skills in service to the congregation.

With the leadership of Chris Clark, and the support of the Creation Justice Team, 5 events were part of the Dark Sky Week. This special week takes place all over the world. The champion organization is International Dark Sky based in Tucson. Darksky.org. Last Weeks Service: Sixth Sunday of Easter
Ever Feel Like an Orphan?

Having family is a gift, well, most of the time. According to Family Systems theorists, family is the smallest unit of humanity, not the individual. Even if you aren’t close with family or are estranged from family, your relationships with them still have an impact on who you are. And, many of us know the term “framily” for friends who are family. Because we recognize the need for close supportive and accountable relationships, we find folks who accept us for who we are and then continue to support us through our lives. They even hold us accountable to be our best selves. A faith community can be framily when family isn’t nearby or close or not living any longer. Last Sunday, Pastor Jody explored what Jesus said about where we receive support, like family, in our lives.

The Strengthen the Church Offering furthers the work of our conferences and the national UCC as we work together to strengthen and renew existing congregations, fund leadership development, and provide exciting new programs for youth and young adults. The offering is divided with 50% staying regionally within your conference and 50% supporting the National Ministries.

Qigong is a wonderful, 5,000 year-old practice from China, very much like Tai Chi. It involves simple movements that build strength, flexibility, balance and well being. It also employs visualization, breath, and mindfulness to integrate the body, mind, and spirit and develop our felt sense of Interbeing. Class is one hour long and involves both sitting and standing practice although it can be done sitting if needed. There is a requested donation of $10 per class but for those of you on limited incomes, any amount will be gratefully received

Next Financial Series Session - June 3

On Wednesday, June 3 we have the great, good fortune of sharing another enlightening evening with our own Wayne Titus. In this last session Wayne discusses the integration of tax, financial and investment planning.

CROP Walk, This Sunday, May 17!

Two weeks ago, you all showed incredible heart by supporting Christian Neighbors. We helped put food on the dinner tables of many of our nearest neighbors.
But for millions of people around the world, the challenge is more than a lack of food—it’s a lack of resources. That’s one reason why we’re supporting the CROP Hunger Walk this afternoon.
25% of what is raised raise will stay in our area, but the rest will provide 'seeds of change'—literally. We’re talking about tools, irrigation, and clean water systems that empower families in developing nations to feed themselves.
We’ve already helped feed our neighbors; now, let’s help move the needle on world hunger.
If you’d like to join our public witness, we start walking at 1:00 PM today at Centennial Park in Holland. Whether you walk or donate, you are helping people move from emergency relief to permanent solutions.

Active Response to ICE Training - Todo Bienvenidos (means 'everyone is welcome') is hosting Active Response to ICE training on June 2, 6-8 pm in Holland. Nomination Committee Update
An Invitation to Shared Leadership

At our Mid-Year Congregational Meeting, DUCC affirmed a desire to move toward a more transparent and intentional process for identifying Church Council leadership. In response, a Nominating Committee has been formed to guide this effort in a spirit of prayerful discernment and shared ministry.
The Nominating Committee includes:

Wayne Titus (Chair, Council Representative)
Bernice Lopata (Council Representative)
Linda Page - McWebb (Congregational Representative)
Barbara Lucier (Congregational Representative)

Over the coming weeks, the Committee will be inviting the congregation into a thoughtful process of discernment—seeking to match the gifts, experiences, and sense of calling within our community to the leadership needs of DUCC.
At-Large members of Church Council play an important role in our shared leadership model. They serve as connectors—helping strengthen communication between committees, Council, and the congregation, while participating in the ongoing work of guiding our church’s mission.
This is an exciting time in the life of DUCC as we continue to grow as a shared leadership community.
If you feel a nudge—or even a quiet curiosity—about serving in this way, we warmly invite you to reach out to any member of the Nominating Committee. We would welcome a conversation with you as you explore whether this might be a place where your gifts and sense of calling could serve the life of our church.
We look forward to this journey of discernment together.

Art Show This Weekend at Capizzo Studio Featuring DUCC Members

From May 8 to the 16, the Saugatuck Douglas Art Club will host their 5th Annual Members Gallery Show and Art Sale. Many church members will have pieces to view and/or buy. The art will be at Capizzo Studio at 3279 Blue Star Hwy, just north of the roundabout. The Gallery is generally open from noon to 5 or 7 (times vary by day). Check out the website below and look under Member Show and Sale for specific hours. Enjoy the show.

May is Cereal Drive Month
Feeding Kids through the Summer

You can drop off cereal in the foyer of the Friendship Hall during the month of May, as we collect cereal for Christian Neighbors and Ladders of Hope (two organizations we support at Douglas UCC). In partnership with the Allegan County Food Pantry Collaborative (ACFPC), our local food banks are collecting cereal throughout area communities to provide additional food for children during summer break.

Why? Because hunger doesn't take a summer vacation, and cereal is a nutritious, vitamin-rich food that needs no preparation, is easily stored, and is well-liked by children. Thank you for helping make summer cereal a blessing for so many.

A few changes have occurred in our Listening Ear service. Pat Denner, Mike Valdez & Paul Burdick have stepped down to focus on new adventures. We are pleased to announce that Doug Sipsma will continue in his role for holding space for others.
The Listening Ear premise is, everyone goes through rough patches in life. Sometimes stress can feel overwhelming. Talking to a caring human helps in so many, sometimes immeasurable, sometimes mystical ways.

They are called clobber texts—verses and passages in the Bible that some readers use to defend their position on any number of topics. These “go to” passages might be about homosexuality, the subservient role of women in marriage, even what make a nation Christian. Last Sunday Pastor Dan examined a passage in the fourteenth chapter of John which if interpreted one way, seems to suggest that Jesus and the worship of him is not just one way to “get to heaven” but indeed the only way to get there. Pastor Dan had doubts . . . and he shared them with us last Sunday.

You did it!
A big thank you to the many DUCC members that helped to make the 2026 Friends of Christian Neighbors Spring Benefit a huge success. The event raised over $26,000 so far!
The Friends committee consisted of members from five of our local churches, and DUCC members were very well represented in all areas of the fundraiser; planning, publicity, buffet food items, and staffing the buffet, bar, donations thermometer, clean up, and of course the financial contributions!
We are very grateful for all the volunteer help and for being part of a remarkable community. For more information, please contact Bert Hallewas.

Thank you to everyone who attended Session 5 of our Financial Literacy Series in Friendship Hall. A special thank you to Dr. Anne Petersen for co-presenting with Wayne Titus and sharing both professional insights from her work in philanthropy and meaningful personal stories about generosity, stewardship, and purpose.

Our final session will be held on Wednesday, June 3 at 6:00 PM in Friendship Hall. We hope you will join us as we conclude the series and bring together many of the important financial planning concepts we have explored throughout the program.

Qigong is a wonderful, 5,000 year-old practice from China, very much like Tai Chi.
It involves simple movements that build strength, flexibility, balance and well being.
It also employs visualization, breath, and mindfulness to integrate the body, mind, and spirit
and develop our felt sense of Interbeing. Class is one hour long and involves both sitting and standing practice although it can be done sitting if needed. There is a requested donation of $10 per class but for those of you on limited incomes, any amount will be gratefully received.

Help Hungry Neighbors Around the World
CROP Walk, May 17

CROP Walks fight hunger locally and around the world. Even a small donation can help a Honduran family; $22 buys 500 baby fish to raise for healthy food or a source of income.
The CROP Hunger Walk has been doing this for over 50 years, and DUCC has been involved many times. This year, our team has raised its goal to $10,000. One quarter of all money raised will go directly to nearby food banks. The rest pays for projects all over the globe.

This Sunday, May 3!

Please mark your calendars for Sunday May 3, 2026
1-3 PM at the Saugatuck Yacht Club.
A $75 donation (or more), per person, is requested.
All proceeds benefit Christian Neighbors (501c3).

This year, the annual fundraiser for Christian Neighbors is coordinated by our Douglas UCC, in cooperation with several local churches. We are still looking for volunteers on the committee to plan and/or staff the event; logistics, food, publicity, sponsorships, etc... One or two meetings a month is all it takes. Attending the Benefit without volunteering is very important also! If interested, please contact Bert Hallewas by email below, or 248-462-9345.

For all payments: please write in memo line: "2026 Spring Benefit".

Easter is a season, not merely a day. Last Sunday we continued with another post-Easter appearance of Jesus as he walks alongside two disciples (one named Cleopas) on their way to an obscure village called Emmaus. They invite Jesus to join them for a meal. At the supper table, Jesus blesses and breaks bread, and in that moment they “recognized” him.
It’s a quiet and cozy story, which causes me to wonder: Why didn’t Jesus put on a bigger show — more public appearances, more elaborate displays to prove he was alive? Qigong is a wonderful, 5,000 year-old practice from China, very much like Tai Chi.
It involves simple movements that build strength, flexibility, balance and well being.
It also employs visualization, breath, and mindfulness to integrate the body, mind, and spirit
and develop our felt sense of Interbeing. Class is one hour long and involves both sitting and standing practice although it can be done sitting if needed. There is a requested donation of $10 per class but for those of you on limited incomes, any amount will be gratefully received.

Walking for Hungry Neighbors
CROP Walk, May 17

Sometimes life takes an unexpected turn. A local two-income family faced new challenges when their son was diagnosed with autism and their daughter needed extra support in school. Choosing care over career, one parent stayed home with the kids, and the family turned to a local food bank to help make ends meet.

For over 50 years, the CROP Hunger Walk has supported families like this one—locally and globally. Our church has set a goal of raising $5,000 for this year's walk in Holland on May 17. One quarter of all funds raised will go directly to nearby food banks, while the rest will support grassroots efforts worldwide.

Bring Back the Night: Dark Sky Week in Saugatuck - Douglas

On April 12, our Sunday service will feature a message from Pastor Jody about the night.

In our culture, darkness has a bad reputation. Yet without it, we wouldn’t see the stars. Darkness is also essential for rest and good health. And when we pass through dark times, the light on the other side can seem even brighter. During this Easter season, we’re reminded that the tomb came before the promise of new life. Join us on April 12 as Pastor Jody reflects on these powerful and hopeful truths.

Then, between April 13 and 20, the Saugatuck–Douglas Friends of the Night Sky invite you to Dark Sky Week—a celebration of the beauty and importance of natural night skies. Come whether you’re curious, creative, or simply enjoy being outdoors.

It begins Monday at the Visitor Center in Douglas with a Photography Talk at 3:30 PM, where you’ll learn how to capture the magic of the night sky. That evening, return for the Awareness Expo (6:30–8:30). This drop-in event features exhibits, local experts, and practical ideas for improving outdoor lighting. Discover how artificial light at night affects wildlife and our well-being—and how small changes can make a difference.

On Wednesday (8:30–11:00 at Hemlock Crossing), experience the universe firsthand at a Stargazing Night. On Thursday at 9:00 PM, join a Night Hike at the Outdoor Discovery Center. We wrap up Sunday (2:00 PM at the library) with a Book Discussion of Night Magic.

Come to one event or all—step outside, look up, and rediscover the night.

Coffee Hour Volunteers Needed

New remote sign up method for DUCC coffee hour volunteers.
The coffee committee is hoping to get more volunteers involved in staffing the coffee hour after Sunday services. Making coffee takes only about 10-15 minutes of your time prior to church, or helping with the cleanup can take about 30 minutes. Once or twice a year, or as often as you'd like, helps to avoid burnout of the current volunteers.

Qigong Winter Class

Qigong is a wonderful, 5,000 year-old practice from China, very much like Tai Chi.
It involves simple movements that build strength, flexibility, balance and well being.
It also employs visualization, breath, and mindfulness to integrate the body, mind, and spirit
and develop our felt sense of Interbeing. Class is one hour long and involves both sitting and standing practice although it can be done sitting if needed. There is a requested donation of $10 per class but for those of you on limited incomes, any amount will be gratefully received.

1-3 PM at the Saugatuck Yacht Club.
A $75 donation (or more), per person, is requested.
All proceeds benefit Christian Neighbors (501c3).

This year, the annual fundraiser for Christian Neighbors is coordinated by our Douglas UCC, in cooperation with several local churches. We are still looking for volunteers on the committee to plan and/or staff the event; logistics, food, publicity, sponsorships, etc... One or two meetings a month is all it takes. Attending the Benefit without volunteering is very important also!

Last Sunday Holy Week began. In Protestant and Catholic traditions, Holy Week rises above all
other weeks of the year. The week of Christmas might lead the way for retail spending, but Holy Week gives the richest detail of Jesus’ last days. On Easter Sunday, it's our tradition at Douglas UCC to fill our altar with Easter Lilies, offered in honor of, or in memory of our friends and loved ones. Can you help us accomplish this?

You can order lilies (and tell us who they are in honor or memory of) for $15 apiece either by using the lily envelopes in the church pews, or sending an email to Claire.
If you choose to email your order to Claire, you will receive a bill from DUCC's treasurer,
Wayne Titus from Quick books. *NOTE NEW DATE: Orders due by this Sunday, March, 29!
After the Easter service, you can take your lilies home with you if you wish!

Silent Retreat

In observance of Holy Week, Wednesday, April 1
10-12pm & 1-3pm

We will meet at the retreat house for two sessions. You may bring a lunch if you wish to stay at the retreat house between sessions. You may attend either the morning or afternoon session, or both. Guidance and inspiration for the silence will be offered.
Silence is God’s first language; listening in sacred silence is a profound way to commune with God in the depths of your heart and soul. It may be just what you need during this Holy Week.

One Great Hour of Sharing
Lenten UCC Offering

Around the world, millions of people lack access to sustainable food sources, clean water, sanitation, education, and opportunity. The work supported by the One Great Hour of Sharing (OGHS) offering — disaster relief, addressing hunger, poverty, and climate change, immigration/migration and refugee services — aids individuals and communities in need.
This work provides people with safety, sustenance, and hope. OGHS helps to improve the lives of people in these challenging situations. We will receive this offering during Lent.
Please place your contribution in an envelope labeled OGHS in the offering plate on Sunday or drop it off at the office during office hours or mail it to PO Box 519 Douglas 49406.

The Archives Team - Requests for Archives

The Archive Committee (Karen Clark and Betsy York) are looking for items that might belong in the church archive.

Any important documents, artifacts, or other items that have historical or legal information will be accepted and later sorted.

Please label the outside of the box with a list of contents. Drop them off at IGC after you call the office and make sure someone is there to open the door.

The boxes can be left in the common room in the corner. Items need to get to the IGC around the end of March. Thank you.

This Year's Lenten Installation

Many Thanks to the Art Guild for their Lenten Art Installation this year.

During Lent, the church invites us into a quieter, more honest space. That’s what this installation is doing. The plain muslin covers everything that’s normally familiar and comforting—it asks us to sit with simplicity and absence. The branch is rough and imperfect, like us, shaped by time and struggle. This space is meant to feel bare on purpose—so we can notice what we usually rush past, and listen a little more closely.

This installation strips the sanctuary down to essentials, just as Lent asks us to strip our lives down to what truly matters.
• The unbleached muslin covers the altar and sacraments without decoration or color. It’s intentionally plain—unfinished, honest, and humble. It represents laying aside excess, comfort, and distraction so we can face ourselves and God more truthfully.
• The bare branch is gnarly, weathered, and alive despite its harshness. It symbolizes our human condition—scarred by life, shaped by struggle, yet still capable of growth. It also echoes the wilderness, the desert, and the cross without illustrating them directly.
• Together, the fabric and branch create a space that feels unfinished—because Lent is unfinished work. It’s not about arrival, but about becoming.

This is not meant to be beautiful in a decorative sense. It’s meant to be honest.

We live in a death-denying culture. We don’t like to think about it, talk about it, or even acknowledge its inevitability. Last Sunday, Pastor Jody talked about the story of the death of Lazarus. Of course, Lazarus was raised from the dead in the story, so there is hope? And maybe there’s another message worth hearing in the story. Palm Sunday Path - Church Members Walk from All Over Michigan

Church members from all over Michigan and from many denominations will walk from Pilgrim UCC, in Lansing to the State Capitol waving palm branches on Sunday March 29. The walk begins at 3pm. At the Capitol there will be speakers and prayers and singing for about an hour. If you would like the training video please text Anne Dooley 312-961- 6135. Qigong is a wonderful, 5,000 year-old practice from China, very much like Tai Chi.
It involves simple movements that build strength, flexibility, balance and well being.
It also employs visualization, breath, and mindfulness to integrate the body, mind, and spirit
and develop our felt sense of Interbeing. Class is one hour long and involves both sitting and standing practice although it can be done sitting if needed. There is a requested donation of $10 per class but for those of you on limited incomes, any amount will be gratefully received.

Friends of Christian Neighbors Spring Benefit
Save the Date, Sunday, May 3

Please mark your calendars for Sunday May 3, 2026
1-3 PM at the Saugatuck Yacht Club.
A $75 donation (or more), per person, is requested.
All proceeds benefit Christian Neighbors (501c3).

This year, the annual fundraiser for Christian Neighbors is coordinated by our Douglas UCC, in cooperation with several local churches. We are still looking for volunteers on the committee to plan and/or staff the event; logistics, food, publicity, sponsorships, etc... One or two meetings a month is all it takes. Attending the Benefit without volunteering is very important also!
For all payments: please write in memo line: "2026 Spring Benefit".
Checks can be written to "Christian Neighbors" at the event, or mailed ahead of time to: DUCC PO Box 19 Douglas, MI 49406.

On Easter Sunday, it's our tradition at Douglas UCC to fill our altar with Easter Lilies, offered in honor of, or in memory of our friends and loved ones. Can you help us accomplish this?

You can order lilies (and tell us who they are in honor or memory of) for $15 apiece either by using the lily envelopes in the church pews, or sending an email to Claire.
If you choose to email your order to Claire, you will receive a bill from DUCC's treasurer,
Wayne Titus from Quick books.
After the Easter service, you can take your lilies home with you if you wish!

Interim Campus Steward and Building/Grounds

We are looking for an Interim Campus Steward. No Council membership or meetings are required. The main responsibilities will be keeping up with the necessary maintenance issues until the June Council elections. Pastor Dan is willing to work with this person as support. There also are documents describing these ongoing items for reference. If you feel a calling to step in to this very important short term role, or have questions, please contact Pastor Dan.

We are also looking for people with skills and passion for things related to the upkeep
and management of our campus who would be interested in joining a Building and Grounds Team. This team is not an ongoing commitment, it is more of a resource group when things need to get done around campus. If you take pride in maintaining a clean and orderly space, have experience with maintenance of structures and equipment, or just enjoy helping out with tasks that need regular attention related to building and property, this Team is for you!

Our Listening Ear service has been a great help to our congregation during a tumultuous time, and so, after a successful trial period, this highly trained team of empathic folks --
Paul Burdick, Mike Valdez, Pat Denner, and Doug Sipsma -- will be continuing the service.
Their premise is, everyone goes through rough patches in life. Sometimes stress can feel overwhelming. Talking to a caring human helps in so many, sometimes immeasurable, sometimes mystical ways.

Last Weeks Service: Fourth Sunday in Lent
The Rest of the Story

Last Sunday Pastor Dan, invited us to see the "the rest of the story" Some days are harder than others to behold the miraculous. The gospel writers record that Jesus performed 37 miracles, including healing a man born blind. I'm not going to argue against miracles! I think I've experienced a few. We heard a miracle story. Jesus heals a man blind from birth by smearing a bit of mud on his eyelids. Pastor Dan, shared that it wasn't the healing that troubled him so, it was the reaction of the religious leaders who said "No!" and mercilessly interrogate the man who can now see. Healing often doesn't come the way we expect it -- but God's love never fails. Watch and listen to the full service, or his message below.

Albert Einstein once said, "There are only two ways to live your life. One is as though nothing is a miracle. The other is as though everything is a miracle." I think I've experienced a few -- a huge chunk of ice falling off a 5-story building just grazing my right shoulder; driving home safely through some pretty awful snow storms this recent winter . . . and more.

The Archives Team - Requests for Archives

The Archive Committee (Karen Clark and Betsy York) are looking for items that might belong in the church archive. Any important documents, artifacts, or other items that have historical or legal information will be accepted and later sorted. Please label the outside of the box with a list of contents. Drop them off at IGC after you call the office and make sure someone is there to open the door. The boxes can be left in the common room in the corner. Volunteers Needed July & August

Need Volunteers - July & August
Sending cards to DUCC folks who are having birthdays, anniversaries, or need a prayer, is a simple ministry that will bring a smile to someone's day! A couple minutes to
let someone know they are thought of, a quick trip to the post office, that's all it takes to bring a smile!

If you have cards that you aren't using that would be appropriate for such occasions,
please drop them off at the office for our use.

If you are willing to send a card on behalf of DUCC to members for one month, please
contact Pastor Dan or Pastor Jody.

Listening Ear: Do You Need to Be Heard?

Our Listening Ear service has been a great help to our congregation during a tumultuous time, and so, after a successful trial period, this highly trained team of empathic folks -- Paul Burdick, Mike Valdez, Pat Denner, and Doug Sipsma -- will be continuing the service. Their premise is, everyone goes through rough patches in life. Sometimes stress can feel overwhelming. Talking to a caring human helps in so many, sometimes immeasurable, sometimes mystical ways. Our listeners are available at the Retreat House on Thursday afternoons from 1 to 3 pm.

Coffee Hour Volunteers Needed

New remote sign up method for DUCC coffee hour volunteers.
The coffee committee is hoping to get more volunteers involved in staffing the coffee hour after Sunday services. Making coffee takes only about 10-15 minutes of your time prior to church, or helping with the cleanup can take about 30 minutes. Once or twice a year, or as often as you'd like, helps to avoid burnout of the current volunteers.
You will be paired with a "buddy" to show you the ropes (and the coffee grinds!).
And now you can sign up remotely, from anywhere at any time. Easy peasy!

Easy Way to Change Your Contribution

New (Easy) options to change your current contribution to DUCC
In response to input we have received from members and friends, we are offering new ways to change your contributions.

You can e-mail Bill Briggs for information regarding your current contribution amount and/or request that your current contribution be changed.
There are now forms and envelopes on the table just inside the door of the Friendship Hall that can be completed and placed in the collection plate to request changes. We will be happy to take care of it for you!
You can use the simple fillable form below and forward to Bill Briggs.

Palm Sunday Path - Church Members Walk from All Over Michigan

Church members from all over Michigan and from many denominations will walk from Pilgrim UCC, in Lansing to the State Capitol waving palm branches on Sunday March 29. The walk begins at 3pm. At the Capitol there will be speakers and prayers and singing for about an hour. If you would like the training video please text Anne Dooley 312-961- 6135 or Pastor Jody at

Qigong is a wonderful, 5,000 year-old practice from China, very much like Tai Chi. It
involves simple movements that build strength, flexibility, balance and well being. It also
employs visualization, breath, and mindfulness to integrate the body, mind, and spirit
and develop our felt sense of Interbeing. Class is one hour long and involves both sitting
and standing practice although it can be done sitting if needed. There is a requested
donation of $10 per class but for those of you on limited incomes, any amount will be
gratefully received.

Friends of Christian Neighbors Spring Benefit

This year the annual fundraiser for Christian Neighbors is coordinated by our Douglas UCC, in cooperation with several local churches. We are looking for volunteers on the committee to plan and/or staff the event; logistics, food, publicity, sponsorships, etc. One or two meetings a month is all it takes. The event will be on Sunday May 3, 2026.
