In This Week's E-Pistle, You Will Find:BEING THE CHURCH
BEING THE CHURCHThis Week's Service: Eighth Sunday after Pentecost -- Don't Worry, Be Happy?Bobby McFerrin's song Don't Worry Be Happy opens this way: Here's a little song I wrote, You might want to sing it note for note, Don't worry, Be happy. In every life we have some trouble, But when you worry you make it double, Don't worry, Be happy. (don't worry, be happy now.) It's a nice thought! But is it as easy as "Don't worry, be happy"? Why do we spend so much time worrying? Is it because we care? Or is it because we can't help it? When does our worry keep us from actually being happy or actually doing something? One thing Jesus says about worry is "do not worry about your life, what you will eat; or about your body, what you will wear. For life is more than food, and the body more than clothes." These will be our considerations on Sunday. I don't presume to solve the worry problem, but maybe talking about it can help. See you Sunday! Please join us on Sunday at 10am in our Sanctuary, or online, live on our Youtube Channel. Message: Rev. Last Week's Service: Eighth Sunday after Pentecost -- Fool!!In most versions of the Bible he's called a rich fool or something close to that. Pretty strong language for someone who ran a successful agricultural enterprise. One translation of the story found in the 12th chapter of Luke calls him a Greedy Farmer. I have issues with that! This unnamed, hard-working man of the soil just wants to build up and expand his business by tearing down the old barns and storage sheds in favor of new ones. On the surface, it makes good business sense. Ancient capitalism at its best. Living the American dream. Or is it? This Sunday also begins a memorable week that occurred 80 years ago. On August 6th & 9th, we dropped atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, killing more than 200,000 Japanese civilians. That devastation ended WW II. We won the war... and we're still paying the price.
