BEING THE CHURCH

This Week's Service: Twenty First Sunday after Pentecost - Balcony People, Basement People

Picture

What’s a Saint? Or saint? Who are your saints? Might you be a saint?
This Sunday we’ll celebrate saints— not in the sense of martyrs, or those who have lived exemplary holy lives and to whom have been  attributed with miracles after their death and then declared Saint  by the Vatican. Taking direction from Paul who referred to all the Christian in Corinth as saints, we’ll celebrate the everyday saints around us who have encouraged us in becoming peace-loving, justice seeking, love bestowing humans.  Gathering in the Memorial Garden at the close of the service and in a spirit of gratitude, we will be invited to name aloud those who have been our saints. Join us for a celebration of saints this Sunday!

Please join us on Sunday at 10 am in our Sanctuary, or online, live on our Youtube Channel.

Last Week's Service: Twentieth Sunday after Pentecost - Generosity of Giving

Picture
Winston Churchill noted: “We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give.” Last Sunday Pastor Dan pondered the generosity of giving. Does being generous lead to better health? It’s never been proven. Does being generous lead to a longer life? No research confirms that. Does being generous protect one for everyday calamities? If only that were true. Then why be generous? Why support worthy causes? Why give money to civic organizations? Why support Douglas United Church of Christ? Click below for Pastor Dan's message and/or full service.

Falling Back! Daylight Saving Time Ends!

Picture
If you still have clocks to adjust, then please do so Saturday night! Daylight Saving Time ends on Sunday, November 2, at 2:00 A.M. At this time, we “fall back” one hour!

Origin story:
Daylight saving time was first introduced as a means to make better use of daylight hours and conserve energy. The idea is often credited to Benjamin Franklin, who suggested a form of it in an essay in 1784. However, DST as we know it today was implemented during World War I and again during World War II as a way to save fuel and energy. The United States officially adopted DST in 1918 under the Standard Time Act.

Listening Ear: Do You Need to Be Heard?

Picture
Photo by Jon Tyson on Unsplash
Our Listening Ear service has been a great help to our congregation during a tumultuous time, and so, after a successful trial period, this highly trained team of empathic folks -- Paul Burdick, Mike Valdez, Pat Denner, and Doug Sipsma -- will be continuing the service. Their premise is, everyone goes through rough patches in life.  Sometimes stress can feel overwhelming. Talking to a caring human helps in so many, sometimes immeasurable, sometimes mystical ways. Our listeners are available at the Retreat House on Thursday afternoons from 1 to 3 pm.

Card Ministry

Picture
Photo by Jenny Razumnaya on Unsplash
Do you love receiving cards in the mail when you're sick, recovering from surgery, have a birthday or anniversary, or need a reminder that you're being prayed for? Maybe sending cards to folks in those situations is a way you could bring a smile to someone's day!  If you are willing to send a card on behalf of DUCC for members' birthdays or anniversaries, for healing or prayers, for one month, please contact Pastor Dan or Pastor Jody. If you have cards that you aren't using that would be appropriate for such occasions, please drop them off at the office for our use. A couple minutes to let someone know they are thought of, a quick trip to the post office, that's all it takes to bring a smile!

The Grand West Association Council is continuing their covenantal prayer circle for all our churches. This is one of the Councils attempts to better connect in our region as a faithful community. The two-year prayer cycle includes our 22 UCC churches, and also UCOM and the Michigan conference staff.

The "church of month" for November is East Congregational UCC.
Thank you for keeping them in our prayers.

Church World Service (CWS) has issued a statement following reports the Trump Administration plans to significantly reduce the number of persons admitted to the United States Refugee Admissions Program to about 7,500, and accept mostly white South Africans – a historic low as the administration continues unprecedented immigration raids as part of its mass deportation agenda. The United Church of Christ is a covenant member organization of CWS and General Minister and President/CEO Rev. Karen Georgia Thompson has signed onto the statement in support.

Kat VanHammen's Qigong Winter classes began in the Friendship Hall on October 7. The classes will run through May!

Qigong is a wonderful, 5,000 year-old practice from China, very much like Tai Chi. It involves simple movements that build strength, flexibility, balance and well being. Class is one hour long and involves both sitting and standing practice although it can be done sitting if needed. There is a requested donation of $10 per class but for those of you on limited incomes, any amount will be gratefully received

Annual Drive for Thanksgiving Kits,
Begins Now! Asking for Rice this year.

Picture
Photo by Imad 786 on Unsplash
It’s November, and with it comes Christian Neighbors’ distribution of Thanksgiving Meal Kits to area low-income families - a 45-year-old tradition in our community. In 2024, 75 volunteers organized, packed and distributed 330 meal kits that provided a Thanksgiving meal to roughly1200 area residents. This year, our church is being asked to collect Rice – 1lb Bags to contribute to these meals. Please consider donating one or more of these items. It is through the kindness and generosity from our community that Christian Neighbors is able to provide this special holiday meal to those in need. Thank you!

Participate in the Spirit of Christmas Program

Picture
Photo by Ignat Kushnarev on Unsplash
For several years, many  from UCC have participated in the Spirit of Christmas program. We are working with Fennville, Pullman schools and Van Buren ISD who identify families that are below poverty level and are struggling to provide clothes for the winter. With the SNAP program in jeopardy, the families needs will include food as well. If you want to donate, there are two ways, you can donate funds which will be given to someone who will shop for the family or you choose to take a family and you will get a list of their needs. So you will get a a chance to shop! If you are interested, Please contact Maryjo Lemanski.

Last Week's Service: Nineteenth Sunday after Pentecost - Generosity of Grace

Picture
Photo by Ubaid E. Alyafizi on Unsplash
Last week Jody reminded us God's grace, and love is unconditional. What risk might you take if you knew that you were loved beyond your wildest imagination? What could you try if you truly believed that you were worthy beyond your ability to know? If all you have to give in this world is yourself, how might you behave differently? The Christian understanding of God is that God loves you unconditionally, that you are worthy of living your best life, that you cannot fall out of grace with God. Grace, a gift, that brings you back to yourself whenever you remember it compels your best. Jody reflected on God's generosity, a gift of unconditional love, grace.

Last Week's Service: Eighteenth Sunday after Pentecost, Extravagant Welcome

Picture
When was a time you felt especially welcomed? What did people do to make you feel welcome? Have you known a time when it was difficult to be hospitable to and welcoming of others? Should extravagant welcome have limits? Is there a price to pay for being too welcoming? What’s the opposite of welcome? If someone were to ask you: “In what specific way is Douglas United Church of Christ a congregation of extravagant welcome?” how would you respond? Last week Pastor Dan reflected on the deeper meaning of an Extravagant Welcome.

BEING THE CHURCH

This Week's Service
Eighteenth Sunday after Pentecost: Extravagant Welcome

Picture
Questions in search of answers. When was a time you felt especially welcomed? What did
people do to make you feel welcome? Have you known a time when it was challenging to be
hospitable to and welcoming of others? Should extravagant welcome have limits? Is there a
price to pay for being too welcoming? What’s the opposite of welcome? If someone were to ask you, “In what specific way is Douglas United Church of Christ a congregation of extravagant welcome?” how would you respond? You’ve probably figured out Sunday’s theme: Extravagant Welcome.

Please join us on Sunday at 10 a.m. in our Sanctuary, or live on our YouTube channel.

Last Week's Service
Seventeenth Sunday after Pentecost: The Generosity of Creation

Picture
Last Sunday, Jody reflected on the Generosity of Creation. According to many traditions, the First Sunday of October was the Feast of St. Francis. St. Francis is known for his commitment to peace and connection to the other-than-human world. Remembering him creates a nice segue from the Season of Creation to the Season of Generosity. This week, as we begin thinking of generosity, we will celebrate the gifts of God through God's creation! The plenty, the beauty, the constancy, the diversity, the cycles of life so evident, the amazing gifts we so often take for granted. We will consider the "gift economy - an economic system where exchanges are made without an immediate expectation of return, relying on principles of reciprocity, mutual trust, and community interdependence."

Trunk or Treat, October 31

Picture
Trunk or Treat: Coming to Douglas UCC!
Mark your calendars for Friday, October 31st, from 5–7pm—because our parking lot is about to get spooky, sweet, and a little silly!

Here’s the deal: we’re inviting YOU (yes, you!) to join in the fun by:
  • Parking your car around the church
  • Decorating your trunk (spooky, silly, or downright fabulous—your choice!)
  • Dressing up in your best costume (bonus points for glitter and halos)
  • Handing out treats to all the little ghouls, goblins, and princesses who stop by!

Flyers are available to help spread the word, and there’s a sign-up sheet in the Friendship Hall for anyone who wants to participate. Whether you’re handing out candy, smiling, or just complimenting costumes, we’d love to have you there. It will be a frightfully fun evening—and remember, the more trunks we have, the more treats (and laughs) for everyone!

Second Sunday Luncheon, October 12th

Picture

They're back and we are excited!  Church potlucks, now called Second Sunday Luncheons, will help us continue to create community while sharing a meal together.

Next Luncheon will be October 12th immediately following the service in the Friendship Hall. Bring a dish to pass, or something as simple as a nice loaf of bread or gallon of cider. We will experiment with not having a sign-up so the menu will be organic and surprising. What is your favorite dish that you would like to share?  We will try to be inclusive, remembering that some of us are gluten free or vegetarian.

During the pandemic, disruptions in social connections made vulnerable people more susceptible to loneliness and the impacts of isolation. Some of those realities still exist today. We understand the value of community and connections and this is one opportunity to address it! Please invite a friend who you know might benefit from being with us!

Listening Ear: Do You Need to Be Heard?

Our Listening Ear service has been a great help to our congregation during a tumultuous time. So, after a successful trial period, this highly trained team of empathic folks — Paul Burdick, Mike Valdez, Pat Denner, and Doug Sipsma - will continue the service. Their premise is that everyone goes through rough patches in life.  Sometimes stress can feel overwhelming. Talking to a caring human helps in many, occasionally immeasurable, sometimes mystical ways. Our listeners are available at the Retreat House on Thursday afternoons from 1 to 3 pm.

Last Week's Service: Sixteenth Sunday after Pentecost - When The Earth Groans

Picture
Photo by Bautik Patel on Unsplash
Last week Pastor Dan pondered - Humans groan. Animals groan too. It’s not often, though, we hear that trees, rocks, rivers, and valleys groan as well. A snippet from Romans 8 reminds us that “the whole creation has been groaning... up to the present time.” Maybe you’ve heard this before, or maybe it’s a novel concept. Indeed, there is no such things as an inanimate object. I’m reminded of a stunning quote for Richard Powers’ remarkable book The Overstory: “People are not the apex species they think they are. Other creatures—bigger, smaller, slower, faster, older, younger, more powerful—call the shots, make air, and eat sunlight. Without them nothing.” If indeed creation has the capacity to groan, what might we be able to do about it? Click above to see the whole service and below for his message.

Picture
Sowing Seeds is a collaborative community art piece by Michigan native Kayla Powers (see link below) featured in an upcoming solo exhibition, Flourish, at the Saugatuck Center for the Arts, November 2025.

From Kayla, "Flourish explores themes of biodiversity, interconnectedness, and the cyclicality of the living world. As part of this vision, I invite you to contribute to Sowing Seeds by creating fabric "seeds" using the pattern provided below. These handmade seeds will be displayed in the exhibition, forming a collective expression of growth, reciprocity, and a gentle resistance against extractive systems."

Participants can create seeds which will be included in the exhibit. Visitors to the exhibition will be invited to take a seed home, symbolizing the gift economy, generosity, and the abundance found in nature. Go to the link below to see how you can participate.
