This Week's Service: The No-Matter-Whatness
of God’s Welcome

Guest Pastor, Dan Plasman, says, "I'm an amateur when it comes to prayer, and really inconsistent. However I do like to read other people’s prayers. The prayerful utterances of Mother Teresa, Augustine, William Sloane Coffin and Ernest Campbell -- both former ministers at Riverside Church NYC -- the prayerful poems of Mary Oliver. This Sunday I’m going to muse on a short prayer (just three verses) offered by King Solomon—a remarkable prayer in that he prays for foreigners and outsiders, people he’s never met who live beyond the borders of Israel. This briefest of ancient prayers jarred loose the memory of people in my life who reminded me of “The No-Matter-Whatness of God’s Welcome.” I’d like you to meet them.

Last Week's Service: Twelfth Sunday after Pentecost: Nourishing Community

When do you find you are the happiest?  What are the activities that bring you joy?  Do you love baking bread for your family? Do you sing and dance freely in public? Who and what give you life? These are the questions we considered last week as we looked at Jesus' understanding of his way and Paul's writing to the early church in Ephesus.

Message: Jody Betten, Music: Jeff Spangler and Ryan Blok

Teacher Love: KUDOS to Margaret Smith

Picture
As the school year opens, it's time to heap KUDOS and gratitude onto the teachers among us. Those who have served, and those heading back to their classrooms. (It's always the right time to heap love, respect, gratitude and honor onto a teacher, though, if we're being honest.)

So KUDOS to all the teachers, and especially to Margaret Smith, named by South Haven Public Schools as the 2024 Teacher of the Year. Each year, South Haven Teachers nominate their peers, and the teaching staff then votes, naming one staff member for the prize.

And this is Margaret's year. She s in her 17th year of teaching music education. After earning her Bachelor’s degree from Olivet College, Margaret moved to Phoenix, Arizona, to teach middle school music. While there, she directed many musicals and choirs as well as contributed to community service. Upon leaving Phoenix, her school renamed their community service award after her.

This year she begins her 11th year teaching in South Haven, in her own third-grade classroom. She is currently working toward her Master’s Degree in Elementary Education at Western Michigan University.

Have you wondered where the members of Douglas UCC come from? How far is the reach of our beautiful faith community?

In the Friendship Hall, there are two maps of the area on bulletin boards. On the map of Southwest Michigan we intend to capture the residences of those who live beyond the Saugatuck Douglas area. Please use a push pin of any color to locate your home (one pin per household, please). On the map of Saugatuck Douglas we intend to capture those of you who live within the village's boundaries (also one pin per household please).

Also, please count the number of churches you can see that you pass by on your way to service on Sunday morning and record that number with your name on the clipboard by the maps. There may be a prize for the person(s) who pass the most!

What about our religious traditions? Are you curious where people come from on their faith journey?  On the third bulletin board is a tree of historical faith traditions. Place a push pin (any color) on the original faith tradition of your spiritual journey. Each person please share.

We also will be capturing info regarding the churches in our neighborhood. Typically churches feel as though they are competing for members, but maybe we could imagine which of them might be a partner in ministry.

Watch for the results of our polls!!!

The Annual Red Dock Poetry Reading,
August 22, 6pm

Picture
The funky music, food, and beverage venue ,The Red Dock, has announced the date and time of their annual end-of-summer Poetry Reading (Just So Saugatuck!), featuring Douglas Poet Laureate Jack Ridl and the Red Dock’s founder and poet Tony Amato. Ridl will be reading from his upcoming book from CavanKerry Press, “All at Once,” the eleventh volume of poetry from this former college professor, and author of poetry and textbooks about and anthologies of poetry. Amato will be reading from a body of work he has amassed throughout his life. It’s a rare treat to hear Tony read his soulful work. And long-time friends of the Red Dock will delight in catching up with the heart of Tony. This annual reading always fills the dock, so come at 6 to get a seat, a bite, a beverage, Poetry begins at 6:30pm, a camaraderie of good souls in a good place, attending to things that matter.

MiniGolf Funder for Area Scholarships

The Saugatuck Woman’s Club is raising funds for scholarships for area students through their Mini Golf Fundraiser!  The owners of Saugatuck Mini Golf offer special tickets for $20 each, usable all summer long. These tickets help the Woman's Club earn $15 for each ticket sold. Connect with Lynne Snyder to support local students through their purchase. She will have the special tickets with her every Sunday at church, or give her a call to arrange a pick-up. A great gift for visiting friends and family members over the summer!

New Membership Class Postponed

Picture
We've postponed this Sunday's New Member class to find a time, this Fall, that works for all interested parties. If you are one of those parties, but haven't signed up or written to us to let us know, just drop a note to Pastor Jody, to share your interest in the class, and watch for the new date, coming soon.
